What is a public body?

The term "public body" is defined under section 1(p) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the FOIP Act) and includes:

  • Government of Alberta
  • Municipalities
  • Metis settlements
  • Drainage districts
  • Irrigation districts
  • Housing management bodies
  • School jurisdictions
  • Post-secondary institutions
  • Public libraries
  • Police services
  • Police commissions
  • Health care bodies

The FOIP Regulation includes a Schedule of the Government of Alberta departments, boards, agencies and commissions that are subject to the Act. Ministerial Regulations may also provide additional designations of public bodies.

An unofficial alphabetical index (PDF) is available that lists all agencies, boards, commissions and other entities that have been designated as public bodies by regulation.

Contact the FOIP Coordinator of a public body if you have questions about how that public body manages your personal information, or you want to request access to information or a correction of your personal information. Contact information is available in the Directory of Public Bodies.
