What is FOIP?

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) applies to public bodies. This includes all provincial government departments, agencies, boards and commissions. It also includes local public bodies such as municipalities, universities, school boards, among many others.

Personal Information and Protection of Privacy Act (PIPA)

  • PIPA is Alberta’s private sector privacy law.
  • PIPA applies to provincially regulated private sector organizations, businesses, and in some instances, to non-profit organizations for the protection of personal information and to provide a right of access to an individual’s personal information.

Health Information Act (HIA)

  • HIA protects your health information in the custody or under the control of a custodian.
  • HIA strikes a balance between the protection of privacy and enabling the appropriate amount of information sharing to provide health services and manage the health system.

Making an Access Request

You must submit your access request directly to the organization that you believe has custody or control of the records you are seeking. Organization means public body, custodian or private sector organization under FOIP, PIPA or HIA.
