Driver's Licence

Renew or replace a driver's licence

Canada Post Strike – Important Information

Driver's licences processed after June 24 were produced but held due to the threat of a postal service disruption. All cards being held were released starting on July 11. If the interim licence that you were issued is set to expire before you receive your new card in the mail, please go to any Alberta registry agent office and request a replacement interim licence at no additional charge.

Driver’s licences are valid for 1 to 5 years depending on your class of licence, medical status and age. Drivers with a medical condition or who hold a professional driver’s licence must bring a completed medical form from your doctor.

Maximum charge for a first licence card, or renewal of a driver's licence card (not including GST):

  • 1 year: $21
  • 2 years: $37
  • 3 years: $53
  • 4 years: $69
  • 5 years: $84

You can renew your licence before the expiry date, including for the following reasons:

  • You’re planning a vacation or if other life events will make it difficult for you to renew your card when it expires
  • You’re moving - you will save on paying the extra change of address fee and will extend the term of your licence

If your licence has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, you may apply for a replacement at an Alberta Registry Office for a fee.
