The Personal Information Protection Amendment Act, 2009 (Bill 54) received Royal Assent on Thursday, November 26, 2009, and will come into force on proclamation. Amendments to the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) include requiring organizations to report significant security breaches to the Information and Privacy Commissioner; requiring organizations to notify individuals if their personal information is processed outside Canada; ensuring consistent standards for handling the personal information of employees; and streamlining the Information and Privacy Commissioner’s processes. The Personal Information Protection Amendment Act, 2009 (Bill 54) was introduced in the Legislature on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 (see news release). The proposed changes to the Act will clarify and strengthen existing protections for Albertans' personal information and will keep the legislation in line with emerging business practices.
