Online Training

FOIP: Focus on Privacy is an interactive online course designed as self-managed training for all employees of public bodies to increase basic awareness of Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the FOIP Act). The course focuses on FOIP issues most relevant to the day-to-day activities of public body employees. Upon completion, participants will have a better understanding of:

  • What is personal information
  • What the purposes of the FOIP Act are
  • Collection, use and disclosure of personal information under the FOIP Act
  • Protecting personal information
  • How the public may access information
  • Offences and penalties under the FOIP Act
  • Formal and informal complaint and oversight mechanisms

The course takes 1 to 2 hours to complete and includes review questions and exercises designed to stimulate thinking and increase awareness about privacy concepts. The course does not need to be completed all at once. It can be stopped and started as necessary to accommodate your work schedule.

A certificate of completion is available to print at the end of the course. However, participation and completion of the course are not recorded.
