Alberta SuperNet

Alberta SuperNet is a broadband network that connects to rural and urban communities in the province.

Overview

The Alberta SuperNet is a network of fibre-optic cables and wireless connections across Alberta connecting over 4,200 schools, hospitals, libraries, government and municipal offices in 429 communities.

The SuperNet was built to connect public institutions (which include schools, hospitals, colleges, universities, libraries, and municipal offices) to a broadband network for high-speed Internet access, video conferencing and other services. Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) also use it to deliver Internet services to rural consumers.

General use

Because the public sector is connected through SuperNet, Albertans have improved access to a variety of services, such as:

  • access to government online
  • eLearning
  • distance learning
  • online library access
  • online health applications

Business and community

By connecting to Alberta’s rural communities, the SuperNet promotes competitiveness and rural economic development. It also creates business opportunities for Internet service providers in rural Alberta.
