Collector's Licence
Definition
A collector is a person employed or authorized by a collection agency to carry on the activities of a collector by:
- Collecting or attempting to collect a debt or debts from a debtor
- Locating debtors in Alberta
- Acting for or dealing with a debtor
Licensing Requirements
To get a collector’s licence you must provide the following:
- Completed Application (pdf) for a Collector’s Licence
- Licensing fee of $72 (Your cheque should be made payable to the Minister of Finance. If you are applying in person, you can also pay this fee usingDebit, Visa, MasterCard or cash.)
Licences take effect the date they are issued. A collector’s licence expires when the licence of the collection agency for which the collector acts expires. The department will send your renewal application to the agency before your licence expires.
General Information
Collectors must follow the requirements of Section 12 of the Collection and Debt Repayment Practices Regulation regarding prohibited practices and knowledge of the legislation.
